Meeting Morton Feldman
Morton Feldman had me meet him before a 1982 concert at Cooper Union Hall in Manhattan where he perused the score for The Abode of Joy, detecting the influence of Béla Bartók, which surprised me. I believe Feldman was inspired by the Alap form of Indian ragas, especially for his slow, extended compositions, but our meeting took place years before I had this insight. Sea Changes, The Life of Thought and Ten Questions include mention of Morton Feldman. - Michael Robinson, December 2020, Los Angeles
