Michael Robinson: Lunar Mansions (Azure Miles Records)

Music by Michael Robinson. 'Scarlet Dawn' opens with a lovely tabla rhythm, topped by a kawala melody, with Arabic female voices and various other sonorities responding. The slower speed creates an otherworldly sensation. The central solo instrument becomes sitar, which mixes angular lines with glissandi. At the eighteen-minute mark, very spare sitar lines prepare the way for a more rapid flurry of percussion sounds, which soon take solos, eventually alternating with the sitar. Alternating sitar and tabla cadenzas close the work.
